Impact of changes in municipal boundaries

Changes in municipal boundaries have various impacts. Permanent officeholders and other persons with permanent employment relationships in the abolished municipality must be transferred to suitable tasks in the new municipality, as agreed by the municipalities involved. The new municipality can hold local elections in the year preceding the merger comes into force, though the municipalities involved can also decide that their local councils will be merged into a new body that will function until the end of the electoral term of office. The local councils involved must also decide on the name of the new municipality. Moreover, a committee must be set up to take care of the administration of the new municipality until the results of the local elections have been ratified and a new local executive board chosen.
