Economic Bulletin 1/2006

Summary

Economic activity strengthened and expanded towards the end of 2005. GDP growth for the whole of 2005 was 2.1 per cent, as predicted in the summer, whereas the 1.5 per cent increase in employment was higher than anticipated.

GDP growth in 2006 will accelerate to 3.7 per cent, partly on account of the low reference figures for the first half of 2005, and is expected to ease down to around 2½ per cent next year.

The rapid growth in employment will continue during the current year. Some 50,000 new jobs were created during 2005, a further 30,000 will be created this year. The trend is expected to slow in 2007, but the Government target of 100,000 new jobs during its term in office nevertheless nearly beckons.
