Martti Hetemäki appointed Permanent Under-Secretary

On 28th May 2003 the Council of State appointed Mr Martti Hetemäki, 46 years if age, Doctor of Political Science and Director General of the Economics Department of the Ministry of Finance, to the post of Permanent Under-Secretary from 1st June 2003. The previous Permanent Under-Secretary, Mr Johnny Åkerholm, has resigned due to his appointment as Secretary-General of the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Mr Hetemäki will be assistant to the Minister and the Permanent Secretary of State. In that capacity he will be responsible for managing and coordinating the preparation of matters falling primarily within the competence of the Economics Department and the Financial Markets Department, as well as matters dealt with by the Economic and Financial Committee of the European union.

From 1995 Mr Hetemäki has been Director General of the Economics Department and Mr Johnny Åkerholm's deputy in the Financial Committee of the EU (presently the Economic and Financial Committee). From the autumn of 2001 Mr Hetemäki has been the ordinary representative of the Ministry of Finance when Mr Åkerholm was Chairman of the Committee.
